Even with the best spam filters in place, spammers continually find new
and inventive ways to get their messages through. Below are some things you can do to help
prevent your email address from making it onto a spammers list.
Don't reply to spam. Responding
to spam or sending a "remove request" confirms receipt and validates the email
address. This only lets spammers know that your email address is legitimate.
Avoid giving out your email address unless you
know how it's going to be used. If you provide a website your address,
make sure to read the terms of use and privacy statements. Always check to see whether or
not your address is going to be distributed to a 3rd party. If you have any doubts, and
don't feel completely comfortable giving out that information, then don't.
Use a different email address for newsgroups.
Newsgroups are a great way for spammers to capture your email address. If you post to a
group, most likely you are going to get spam. The best way to get around this is use
another email address for newsgroups. Use your main email address for friends and
relatives.
Don't buy anything advertised by spammers.
The primary reason people send spam is because they are making money from it. So, it
reasons that if individuals stop purchasing products through spam advertisements,
companies will eventually stop paying spammers to advertise for them.
Don't post your address on a personal website.
Posting your email address on a personal webpage is an invitation for spammers. Spammers
and the people who sell spamming services as a business have software that
"harvests" email addresses from the Internet. When they capture your address,
they put it into a database of other email addresses to which spam is sent.
