As you may have heard on the news, there is a serious virus spreading rapidly and is affecting computers worldwide. This virus can cause your computer to shut down, even while you are using it, and can cause great inconvenience. That is why we'd like to make you aware of it so you can take some quick, simple measures to prevent this virus from infecting your computer.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp and find out more about how to prevent the Blaster Worm from infecting your computer. Please note Windows 95, 98, ME and Macintosh do not appear to be affected at this time.

 

Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server:

  1. Restart the computer
  2. Click on Start / Settings / Control Panel
  3. Double click on Network Connections
  4. Double click on the TDS connection
  5. Click on the "Properties" button on the bottom of the window
  6. Click on the "Advanced" tab at the top of the window
  7. Check the box that states "Protect my computer or network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet"
  8. Click "Ok" and close out all open Windows
  9. Connect to the Internet normally
  10. Upon connection, immediately visit this site for Virus removal: http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

 

Windows 2000:

  1. Restart the computer
  2. Click on Start / Settings / Control Panel
  3. Double click on Network Connections
  4. Double click on the TDS connection
  5. Click on the "Properties" button on the bottom of the window
  6. Click on the "Networking" tab at the top of the window
  7. Highlight the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" option and click the "Properties" button
  8. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window
  9. Click the "Options" tab at the top of the window
  10. Highlight the "TCP/IP filtering" option and then click the "Properties" button
  11. Check the box that states "Enable TCP/IP Filtering (All adapters)"
  12. There are three columns with the following labels:

In each column, you must select the "Permit Only" option

  1. Click "OK" until all windows are closed and close out any other open windows
  2. Connect to the Internet normally
  3. Upon connection, immediately visit this site for Virus removal: http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

 

Windows NT 4.0:

If you have Windows NT 4.0, you will need to install a third-party firewall in order to connect to the Internet to install the virus patch. Most firewall software for home users is available in free or trial versions. If you are unable to install a firewall, you must contact your computer manufacturer directly or contact Microsoft directly at 1-800-936-5700 (Credit Card charges may apply for support) for more information. You may also visit http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp from an unaffected computer to find out additional information.
